St. Mary Parish Pastoral Council Retreat Closing Prayer
Dear Lord We are thankful for the time we had together today. Thank you for the gift of Jim's guidance, for the comforts of this environment and for the nourishment of our minds and bodies. Let us leave here today with the assurance that we can listen with both our minds and hearts open, and that the Holy Spirit is there to guide us if we find ourselves lost in the details and unable to grasp the bigger picture. Help us to recognize and acknowledge our gifts and to give freely of them without prompting. Let us embrace our "lights" with joy and consider our "shadows" as opportunities for growth. Help us to be still, to listen, to be available and to discern what we are called to do. Make us unafraid to open up, take a chance and make a connection. Help us be wise and compassionate counselors, in service to our Pastor, and to our brothers and sisters at St. Mary Student Parish. May this feeling of fellowship and peace remain with us. In your name we pray, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. . . . . Amen (Prayer written throughout the day by Lisa P.)

It Feels Like Fall
I am definitely enjoying this cooler weather. I've been busy at work trying to implementing new and improved processes. Sometimes training an employee is like training an old dog new tricks. I'm really excited, however, for PACS. We will start initial implementation May '06. Speaking of work, my co-workers apparently think that I should be single no more. They are trying to "help" and I hope things don't end in disaster. I think this is an honest and innocent attempt to be friendly but sometimes I wonder if they are just trying to distract me from my role as "that damn young chap who's trying to change everything." I feel for those affected by Hurricane Katrina. You'd think we Americans would be better prepared for such an event. The French Quarter - HEAD Tour 2002

RIP Vanny
Wednesday, January 26th, 2005 The News Herald
As some of you know Chris graduated from Woodhaven and I had the opportunity to march with him as a fellow 'bone. When I was a freshman his uniquely cynical views of things definitely made life easier - or at least seem like it was easier. He was kind enough to drive me to school and gave me stars to award my section with when I became section leader. He was truly a great person. Death sucks. Attitude
This week at work has been a challenge. On Friday, everything that could break and go wrong did and Monday was extremely busy. Monday night I put up the following away message:
Auto response from HeadTBone (2:23:03 AM): I was very busy at work yesterday. Everyone must be trying to get their x-rays out of the way before Thanksgiving. I also spent some time with a 4th grader. She's one of my co-worker's daughters. Other than the constant "but why?" questions I was successful in keeping her out of her mother's hair (and maintaining my sanity). Admittedly, she slowed me down a lot. Then again, it sure took the edge off an otherwise hectic Monday. I got this response:
Lizzie (2:23:03 AM): hey nando, it's lizzie. this will probably come off as annoying, but i was reading your away message about your co-worker's daughter who kept asking "but why?" i think when we get older we lose that innate curiosity to challenge everything, and it's something we should always cherish. have a happy thanksgiving :) I e-mailed Lizzie back and I thought I'd share it here: Lizzie, Your message was not annoying. I liked having Abby with me on Monday and I honestly let work get in the way of appreciating it. With Dance Marathon and K-grams my goal was to be there for the kids. Unfortunately at work it's easy to narrow your mindset to the point you miss the opportunities that come along to really make someone's day. Abby wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up. She keenly noted that vets use much of the same x-ray equipment we use at the hospital. I showed her some of the things I do and I even let her help. By 9:30 her mom was ready to go and she wanted to stay with me. I really should not have been relieved that she was leaving. Instead I should have been looking forward to the next time she comes in and cherishing her genuine curiosity in what I do. Looking back, I am so grateful that I had the experiences with DM that I did. I need to keep them in mind in the future. It's amazing what a little attitude adjustment can make. Thank you for reminding me and I hope you have a great Thanksgiving. - Nando -- We miss opportunities in our daily lives all the time. If we can't see the opportunities then I hope others will take the time to show us. On a lighter note, there is nothing like an impromptu trip to La Dolce Vita, some arts and crafts and listening to Val tell stories about TFA in Louisiana. It was great seeing her. On Sunday I attended a Filipino music and had a great Thanksgiving dinner with the guys and girls at 411 N. Ingalls. What a great weekend.

Life and Death
At the hospital, everytime a baby is born they play Brahm's Lullaby over the PA. Tonight I thought about all the people that die in the hospital. We have a room right down the hall from the radiology department in the ER that is used for grieving family members. There was a family in there tonight and one of the x-rays for an inpatient was cancelled because she expired. Why don't they play a tune on the PA system for them?
